L'origine di questo ossario si fa risalire al XVI secolo quando la città fu flagellata da tre rivolte popolari, tre carestie tre terremoti, cinque eruzioni del Vesuvio e tre epidemie e, essendo il luogo isolato, fu qui che vennero raccolti i cadaveri delle vittime. Micidiale fu la pestilenza del 1656, per cui i muri che chiudevano le cave furono di nuovo abbattuti e le stesse cave, secondo alcuni, accolsero 250.000 cadaveri su una popolazione 400.000 abitanti e, secondo altri, addirittura 300.000.
