Lanius meridionalis koenigi, sottospecie di Averla Meridionale endemica delle Isole Canarie. Il nome degli uccelli appartenenti al Genere Lanius deriva dal latino "Macellaio" con riferimento alle loro abitudini alimentari. Sono soliti cacciare all'agguato le loro prede (principalmente artropodi e microvertebrati), scrutando il terreno dai rami degli arbusti delle zone semidesertiche in cui vivono. Il becco viene utilizzato per uccidere la preda che, come documentato in alcune specie, viene "impalata" sulle spine delle xerofite della zona per essere consumata in seguito (Lepley et al., 2010).
