Monumento simbolo della Regione Piemonte e luogo che ha ispirato lo scrittore Umberto Eco per il best-seller Il nome della Rosa, la Sacra di San Michele è un'antichissima abbazia costruita tra il 983 e il 987 sulla cima del monte Pirchiriano, a 40 km da Torino. Dall'alto dei suoi torrioni si possono ammirare il capoluogo piemontese e un panorama mozzafiato della Val di Susa. All'interno della Chiesa principale della Sacra, risalente al XII secolo, sono sepolti membri della famiglia reale di Casa Savoia. Dedicata al culto dell'Arcangelo Michele, difensore del popolo cristiano, la Sacra di San Michele s'inserisce all'interno di una via di pellegrinaggio lunga oltre 2000 km che va da Mont Saint-Michel, in Francia, a Monte Sant'Angelo, in Puglia. Nella sua costruzione è ben visibile come la chiesa attuale sia eretta su strutture molto più antiche. La realizzazione della Sacra di San Michele ha richiesto secoli durante i quali gli stili di costruzione si sono modificati e di molto. Ristrutturata, è stato affidata alla cura dei padri rosminiani. Nel 2016 il museo del complesso monumentale abbaziale è stato visitato da oltre 100.000 persone. Il 24 gennaio 2018, il Monastero Vecchio della Sacra ha subito un incendio del tetto. I danni sono stati ingenti ma non è stata intaccata la parte architettonicamente più rilevante.
