Durante il lungo trasferimento in auto da Puerto Natales (Chile) a El Calafate (Argentina) lungo la mitica Routa 40, abbiamo percorso un tratto di una cinquantina di chilometri di sterrato (chiamato rìpio) attraverso la tipica steppa patagonica, un deserto pietroso battuto da un vento che ti entra direttamente nel cervello impedendoti di parlare e quasi di pensare. Il paesaggio era affascinante ma allo stesso tempo inquietante pensando che eravamo soli (non abbiamo incrociato nessuno) con il rischio di forare o peggio di uscire di strada e dover passare la notte in auto in un posto dove gli unici abitanti sono ... i puma! Quando ripenso alla Patagonia mi vengono in mente gli animali, gli spazi infiniti, i cieli incredibili, la polvere ed il vento. L'essenza della Patagonia è riassunta magistralmente nelle parole dello scrittore e filosofo Jorge Luis Borges: "Non c'è niente in Patagonia tra le montagne a un passo dal cielo, tra le nuvole d'argento, tra le pianure senza fine, tra il vento che sembra raccogliere tutta la polvere del mondo, tra mari impossibili che nascondono relitti del passato, balene e leoni marini. Ma è un niente che riempie lo stesso l'anima e ci riconcilia con la natura".
