Porta Pila fu eretta nel 1647 al centro delle Fronti Basse del Bisagno, come principale punto di accesso tra le mura di levante, e più volte ricollocata all'interno della città nel corso degli anni, fino all'attuale sistemazione sull'altura di Montesano, sopra la Stazione Brignole. Sulla sua sommità è posta una statua della Madonna, custode della città, ormai circondata e sovrastata dai palazzoni edificati negli anni 50 e 60.
