Passeggiando tra le vie del quartiere non è cosi' improbabile, d'improvviso, imbattersi in una maiko o in una geiko che con passo fugace, mulinando velocemente i suoi sandali torna a casa nella sua okiya, sale o scende da un taxi o, sfuggente e timida come un animale selvatico, si infila furtiva nei ristoranti o nelle sale da tè, che fin dai tempi dei samurai, sono stati complici luoghi d'incontro tra queste “figlie delle arti” e ricchi mercanti, eminenti intellettuali, influenti politici e potenti uomini d'affari.
