Il Forte di Bard è un'imponente opera di sbarramento, eretta all'imbocco della Valle d'Aosta. La fortezza sabauda occupa lo sperone roccioso che sbarra l'accesso alla valle. L'attuale fortificazione venne costruita tra il 1830 e il 1838 sulle rovine di un precedente castello, distrutto nel 1800 dalle truppe di Napoleone. In quell'occasione, dopo aver resistito a un assedio di 15 giorni, la guarnigione si arrese - con l'onore delle armi - all'Armée de Réserve francese, composta da 40.000 uomini, che aveva valicato le Alpi al Colle del Gran San Bernardo. Il complesso, progettato dall'ingegnere militare Francesco Antonio Olivero, è composto da diversi corpi di fabbrica indipendenti, capaci di garantire la reciproca difesa. La piazzaforte è un perfetto esempio dell'architettura militare dell'epoca, disponeva di potenti artiglierie (50 bocche da fuoco di vario calibro fra mortai, obici e cannoni) alloggiate in casematte poste su diversi livelli. Poteva accogliere 416 uomini (raddoppiabili con sistemazione paglia a terra) e disponeva di scorte per resistere ad un assedio di 3 mesi.
