Erbacea perenne alta 20-80 cm, provvista di radice fittonante e dura; fusti eretti, fogliosi e a volte ramificati nella parte superiore; foglie sempre opache, le basali lirate, pelose a margine crenato o dentato, mentre le cauline sono progressivamente pennatosette con lacinie strette, lanceolate e a margine peloso; infiorescenza di circa 3 cm con involucro squamoso e circondato da brattee lanceolate; numerosi fiorellini tubulosi a 5 lobi diseguali tra loro, quelli esterni rosa-violacei; fioritura giugno-settembre; cresce nei prati aridi, spiazzi rocciosi, pendii secchi, al margine dei boschi, dal piano fino a superare 1500 m s.l.m.; in Italia è presente in tutte le regioni, con esclusione delle isole maggiori.
