La Darsena Romana è la parte più interna ed antica del Porto di Civitavecchia, un piccolo porticciolo di forma rettangolare, in passato protetto dalle mura dell'Antica Rocca ed oggi comunicante con il resto del porto attraverso un passaggio scavato nella roccia. Se vi trovate all'interno del Porto di Civitavecchia, potete raggiungerla con una piacevole passeggiata partendo da Varco Fortezza (Forte Michelangelo) e costeggiando prima l'antico muraglione di Urbano VII con la Fontana del Vanvitelli, la monumentale Porta Livorno ed infine i resti dell'Antica Rocca. Progettata quasi 2000 anni fa dal grande architetto Apollodoro di Damasco, la Darsena serviva principalmente per la sosta ed il rifornimento delle navi romane della flotta imperiale. L'imperatore Traiano, aveva individuato in questo luogo una base sicura e strategica al contempo, e la sua importanza è attestata dalle numerose epigrafi sepolcrali, recuperate nel 1864. Queste sono, infatti, una testimonianza della presenza dei classiari, i marinai della flotta romana che tra il II e il III secolo d.C. utilizzavano questo scalo come stazione per le armate di Roma. Ma le epigrafi non sono certo l'unico ritrovamento che attesta l'importanza storica di questo luogo! Per saperne di più leggete questo articolo in cui si parla anche del celebre ritrovamento del braccio in bronzo con tridente di una colossale statua di Nettuno. Sopravvissuta intatta durante tutto il Medioevo sotto il predominio della signoria dei Vico, la Darsena, difesa dal possente Castello della Rocca, passò sotto il potere temporale dei Papi che la restaurarono e la sfruttarono come base strategica per la loro flotta navale. Un approdo sicuro all'interno della costa laziale per il fiorente commercio dell'allume. Purtroppo i violenti bombardamenti della seconda guerra mondiale la distrussero completamente e l'attuale aspetto della Darsena si deve ad interventi più recenti. Oggi la Darsena ospita la sede della Guardia di Finanza di Mare, del Circolo Nautico di Civitavecchia e da qualche anno anche dell'Associazione "Amici della Darsena Romana" una Onlus che svolge attività di carattere sociale. Ad ogni modo l'attività che salta subito all'occhio, durante la vostra passeggiata alla Darsena Romana è senza dubbio la pesca. Qui, infatti, non è raro incontrare i pescatori intenti nel loro lavoro mentre preparano le reti a bordo dei loro pescherecci. La Darsena Romana ospita anche un cantiere navale a disposizione per tutte le piccole imbarcazioni da diporto che vi sono ormeggiate. Oggi camminare tra i resti romani e pontifici di questo luogo senza tempo, è un'esperienza suggestiva che vale la pena di vivere per conoscere appieno la grandezza del Porto di Roma e la storia di Civitavecchia.
