Joffre Gorge - Karijini National Park - Pilbara - Resto parecchio ad ammirare uno dei più bei luoghi di questo viaggio, quando, nelle rocce a strapiombo accanto a me, fa la sua comparsa un grosso lucertolone, un goanna o in questo caso specifico varanus pilbarensis (ci sono una ventina di tipi diversi di goanna). E' lungo circa mezzo metro. Probabilmente è uno degli avvistamenti più rari di tutto il mio lungo viaggio e me lo godo per almeno 15 minuti. Vederne uno è molto difficile dato che scappa e si nasconde molto prima di poter essere avvistato. Non è confidente anche perché storicamente cacciato dagli aborigeni come cibo. Capace di lanciarsi e fare dei voli-salti di oltre 10 metri.
