La sua immagine, colta in una frontalità iconica e astratta, è solenne, maestosa e sovrasta i quattro soldati addormentati che sono ripresi con un diverso punto di vista rispetto al Redentore quasi a voler differenziare la sfera umana da quella divina. Anche il paesaggio immerso nella luce dell'alba ha una sua valenza simbolica: il contrasto tra gli alberi spogli alla destra del Cristo e gli alberi frondosi alla sua sinistra vuole significare il rinnovamento dell'umanità attraverso la luce della Resurrezione.
Da ricordare inoltre che secondo la tradizione nel soldato addormentato visto di fronte si tende a riconoscere un autoritratto di Piero della Francesca".
