Foglie piccole, ovato-oblunghe raramente lanceolate, appuntite, sessili e normalmente opposte, le superiori a volte tre-verticillate. All'ascella delle foglie superiori i peduncoli fiorali, ricurvi alla fruttificazione e più lunghi delle foglie ascellanti, portano i fiori ermafroditi con sepali e di colore rosso mattone o rosso aranciato o rosso salmone; 5 stami con filamenti ricoperti da peli purpurei o a volte giallastri o biancastri, antere gialle; ovario supero. Il frutto è una capsula deiscente a pisside sferica che si apre orizzontalmente in due emisfere, lasciando fuoriuscire 20-35 semi. La radice è fusiforme. Habitat: Campi coltivati, luoghi erbosi e lungo le strade. Incolti e luoghi aridi e aree antropizzate, dal piano fino a 1200 m Diffusione Molto comune.
