Lo Tsunami di Scilla

Nel febbraio del 1783 la calabria estrema fu devastata da un fortissimo terremoto che ne cambio' per sempre la gia' fragile struttura socio_economica.Questo movimento tellurico fu all'origine anche di uno tsunami,che colpi' prevalentemente Scilla.Il danno alla popolazione scillese fu elevatissimo:il maremoto si genero' subito dopo la scossa,producendo onde lunghe alte fino a 8-9 metri e travolgendo la popolazione che a causa del primo evento tellurico di circa 12 ore prima si era riversata impaurita sulla spiaggia in cerca di riparo.Le fonti storiche del tempo (Sarconi [1784] e Vivenzio [1788] ) parlano di un'onda alta tra i 7 e gli 8 m che travolse le barche, le baracche e le tende che ospitavano la popolazione di Scilla, rifugiatasi sulla spiaggia in seguito alla scossa del giorno precedente.
Il bilancio di danni e vittime per i terremoti e il maremoto fu terribile: secondo le stime ufficiali del Vicario generale del re di Napoli, le vittime complessive furono quasi 30.000 in Calabria (1300 solo a Scilla per lo tsunami), cui si aggiunsero le vittime in Sicilia (almeno 700 nella sola Messina). Come conseguenza della sequenza sismica, durata per più di tre anni, altre migliaia di persone morirono negli anni seguenti a causa di carestie, malattie e stenti (circa 5000).
