Impegnata sin dal primo decennio del Novecento in iniziative assistenziali a favore dei propri dipendenti, la Fiat cominciò a promuovere la costruzione diretta di case nel corso degli anni Cinquanta, allo scopo di rispondere alla crescente richiesta di abitazioni incentivata dal consistente tasso di immigrazione che il suo stesso notevole sviluppo concorreva ad alimentare. Ad agevolare l'espansione di tale programma furono anche i vantaggi concessi dalla normativa vigente in materia di case popolari, soprattutto l'opportunità di disporre dei contributi statali concessi nell'ambito dell'attuazione del piano Fanfani. Dopo il complesso realizzato in apertura degli anni Cinquanta lungo l'asse di via Verolengo nei pressi delle Ferriere, sorse così pochi anni dopo l'ampio insediamento compreso fra i corsi Giambone, Corsica e le vie Olivero, Guala, Vian, Graneri, poco distante dagli stabilimenti di Mirafiori e del Lingotto. L'area fu occupata da dodici fabbricati a dieci piani fuori terra, non rispondenti pienamente ai canoni dell'edilizia economica quanto più che altro a quelli applicati in quel periodo nei progetti per le classi medie. Articolati in varie metrature, gli alloggi sono stati in parte venduti agli inquilini tramite formule di cessione a riscatto. Dal 1958 anche nell'area tra corso Corsica e via Oberdan, sempre sull'asse di corso Giambone, furono costruiti sei nuovi palazzi
