C'era una volta, più o meno alla fine del 1800 Luigi Grassi, baffo arrotolato all'insù e boccolo chiamato bananina proprio al centro del capo. Scenografo dei teatri di corte e dei teatrini dei pupi, lavorava in una stradina, via S. Biagio dei librai, molto famosa e conosciuta fin dall'antichità come “Spaccanapoli”, proprio perchè spaccava a metà la vecchia città di Neapolis, che oggi è il nostro centro antico. Il signor Luigi Grassi oltre a dipingere le scenografie, costruiva e riparava ogni oggetto di forma o genere, tra cui i pupi di scena. Questo strano laboratorio attirava e incuriosiva lo sguardo di tutta la gente di passaggio. Un giorno una mamma entrò in quella bottega con una bambola rotta tra le braccia ed implorò il signor Luigi di aggiustarla. Il maestro, che usava indossare un camice bianco per non sporcarsi quando dipingeva e con un tono deciso e sicuro rispose: ”non si preoccupi, questa bambola tornerà come nuova”. Dopo qualche settimana la donna ritornò nella bottega e così vide la bambola completamente guarita e rivolgendosi al signor Luigi disse: ”dottore grazie la mia bambina sarà felicissima e le dirò che sono andata alla bottega del mago”. Ben presto la voce si sparse e furono tante le mamme che si recavano in bottega per recuperare quell'unica bambola della propria bambina. In poco tempo il laboratorio si riempì di bambole smontate, c'erano gambe, occhi, braccia, che penzolavano dappertutto. Fu proprio una persona del popolo che passando di lì, nel vedere tutte quelle bambole smontate esclamo: ”me pare proprio o' spitale d'è bambule”, tradotto: ”mi sembra proprio l'ospedale delle bambole”. Fu da allora che Luigi Grassi, sopra una tavoletta di legno con un pennello tinto di rosso scrisse: "OSPEDALE DELLE BAMBOLE", aggiungendo una croce come quella degli ospedali veri e l'appese all'esterno della bottega.
