Come altre torri costiere e d'avvistamento del litorale ligure anche la torre Scola o Scuola fa parte di quel sistema difensivo voluto dal Senato della Repubblica di Genova tra il Cinquecento e il Seicento a protezione delle coste e, conseguentemente, dei borghi e villaggi. Secondo alcuni studi la torre, costata secondo le stime 56.000 lire genovesi, potrebbe essere stata edificata ai primi del XVII secolo rispondendo a quelle nuove esigenze militari e balistiche che costrinsero il senato genovese ad una rapida conversione architettonica dei siti difensivi già presenti o comunque crearne di nuovi. La torre è di forma pentagonale con uno spessore medio delle mura di circa 4 metri, capace di ospitare fino a otto persone (otto soldati, un capitano e un mastro "bombardero") e dieci cannoni, e in grado di coprire "a fuoco" il braccio di mare tra la baia della Palmaria, la baia dell'Olivo a Porto Venere e il seno di Lerici. Con la dominazione napoleonica fu al centro degli scontri navali del 23 gennaio 1800 tra le flotte inglesi e francesi, per allontanare questi ultimi dal golfo spezzino, tanto che per i danni subiti dalle cannonate (sventramento delle cortine di un lato della torre) fu deciso il totale abbandono già nella prima metà del XIX secolo. Scongiurata la demolizione completa nel 1915, prevista dalla Marina Militare e cancellata dopo l'interessamento di Ubaldo Mazzini che da ispettore ai monumenti fece un'apposita segnalazione al Ministero della pubblica istruzione, si decise di convertire la torre a faro di segnalazione. Tra il 1976 e il 1980 la struttura ha subito radicali interventi di restauro e di consolidamento delle mura perimetrali. (Cit. Wikipedia)
