Nel 1926 a Como venne indetto un concorso per la realizzazione di un monumento dedicato ai caduti della prima guerra mondiale. Vengono presentati due progetti dagli architetti Terragni Lingeri e Asnago Vender ma la costruzione non viene realizzata. Nel 1930, in occasione della visita del duce alla triennale di Monza il podestà da incarico agli architetti comaschi Cereghini, Giussani, Lingeri, Mantero, Terragni di realizzare uno schizzo del 1914, nato per una centrale elettrica, dell'architetto futurista Sant'Elia. La direzione dei lavori viene affidata a Giuseppe Terragni che si impegna a rispettare al massimo lo schizzo originale di Sant'Elia senza aggiungere nulla. Nel definire i disegni costruttivi di dettaglio, Terragni effettua un'opera di pulizia rispetto agli elementi decorativi previsti dall'architetto Prampolini, primo incaricato di tradurre in scala i disegni originali di Sant'Elia. Nella relazione conclusiva del 16 giugno 1934 l'architetto Terragni dichiara di aver rettificato in misura sensibile il primitivo progetto? nel quale non era indicata neppure una misura. Dall'ipotesi "futurista" di partenza si giunse perciò ad un'opera che Giuseppe Terragni valutava come "ormai dichiaratamente razionalista.
Il monumento che possiamo ammirare oggi è una torre di 33 metri di altezza al cui interno si trova in sacrario con incisi i nomi dei 650 caduti comaschi della prima guerra mondiale. Il monumento reca incise due frasi. Sulla facciata frontale la frase recita "La città esalta con le pietre del Carso la gloria dei suoi figli 1915-1918? mentre sulla facciata a lago troviamo scritto "Stanotte si dorme a Trieste o in paradiso con gli eroi"
