Crooked horn...

Stambecco

Crooked horn sent on February 08, 2018 (21:29) by Alessandro Cirillo. 3 comments, 668 views. [retina]

, 1/500 f/5.6, ISO 800, hand held. Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso, Italy. Specie: Capra ibex

Attention Alessandro the rings to be counted are not those in front but rather the notches that are more evident on the back of the horns. They correspond to the winter growth stops. On older individuals, growth tends to stop and it becomes difficult to assess the exact age without being able to touch the animal. However, a very special trophy even if the animal should be about 11 years old. On the Gran Paradiso already 15 years are a nice age for ibex anyway ;-)

Francesco, thanks for the excellent explanation. Like many, I thought you should count the notches in front of them. Now I know a new thing :-)
