Oreste Fernando Nannetti fa il suo ingresso al manicomio nel 1958, con l'accusa - pare - di oltraggio a pubblico ufficiale e per questo confinato nel reparto giudiziario. Nasce (sotto una cattiva stella) a Roma nel 1927 da Concetta Nannetti e da padre ignoto, a sette anni è accolto in un istituto di carità per poi passare ad uno per minorati psichici, poi ancora all'ospedale Forlanini di Roma a causa di una malattia alla colonna vertebrale. È nella sezione giudiziaria del reparto Ferri che il Nannetti inizia il suo capolavoro. Si firma NOF4, un acronimo del suo nome (Nannetti Oreste Fernando), dove il 4 probabilmente è riferito ai luoghi dove è stato rinchiuso, orfanotrofio, carcere, due manicomi. Utilizzando la fibbia in dotazione alla "divisa da matto", incide instancabilmente sul muro del suo reparto, per tutto il periodo che è ospitato, in tutte le ore d'aria che gli sono concesse, un lunghissimo graffito composto da segni, parole e disegni. Chiuso in un totale mutismo, esprime così il suo mondo interiore. Personaggio chiave di questa storia è l'infermiere Aldo Trafeli, forse l'unico che riesce ad accedere ai suoi pensieri. Il Nannetti gli "traduce" la sua opera e, grazie a questo, a tratti si svelano frasi affatto banali: "come una farfalla libera canta tutto il mondo è mio... e tutto fa sognare. L'elemento umano si allunga e si accorcia. Grafico metrico e mobile della mortalità ospedaliera: 10% per radiazioni magnetiche teletrasmesse, 40% per malattie varie trasmesse o provocate, 50% per odi e rancori personali provocati o trasmessi". Il Nannetti segue un metodo preciso: prima "disegna" sul muro il contorno di una pagina, poi lo riempie armato di fibbia e di pazienza. Non viene distratto da nulla neanche dai tre alienati che occupano sempre la stessa panchina e che il Nannetti "scontorna", lasciando sul muro le sagome vuote a testimonianza di queste presenze. Non riceverà mai visite di parenti o amici, nonostante negli anni scriva molte cartoline. Stuzzicato su argomenti piccanti, rispondeva che il suo unico interesse era la scienza. In effetti, il muro è pieno di riferimenti alla tecnologia, quelli più particolari sono i disegni di missili, pianeti e astronauti realizzati prima che l'uomo andasse sulla luna! Quasi un presagio...
