Capital city of Wales, Cardiff's only Anglican cathedral is at Llandaff, about 5 km north west of the modern city centre and has a beautiful village-like setting, in the lee of a wooded hill.

Stormy sky, back late last November, I managed to get a good study, inside and out, after walking up from the city centre along the River Taff.

The original 12c building has been struck by very damaging lightning strikes many times, a famous Welsh rebellion in 1400 severely damaged much of the building and then in 1703 a horrendous storm damaged the structure so much that it nearly collapsed!

Largely rebuilt later, an almost direct hit by a Luftwaffe parachute mine in 1941 (on the periphery of what was known as the Cardiff Blitz), caused yet more severe damage to the cathedral. in the UK, only Coventry cathedral famously suffered more during WW2.

As recently as 2007 a further lightning strike effectively blew up the cathedral's organ (it now has a wonderfully new shiny one).

The result is a wonderful mix of architectural styles, mainly Gothic but with modern flourishes.

IF ever a cathedral was so unlucky (ironically by "Acts of God" - no offence intended - then this golden guardian is very much needed - or really needs to work harder at his job!

Unfortunately I could not find online who or how old this statue is, his touch of mystery is rather nice though.

The light is beautiful and beautiful, evidently favored by a stormy sky.
