Il 24 novembre del 1973 un Douglas Super DC-3 della US Navy fu costretto ad un atterraggio di emergenza sulla sperduta spiaggia di Sólheimasandur nell'Islanda sud occidentale. Tutto l'equipaggio sopravvisse all'impatto e riuscì a mettersi in salvo, ma l'aereo venne abbandonato sul posto. Oggi la sua carcassa è ancora lì dove si schiantò 40 anni fa, ed anche se non è facilissimo da raggiungere è un luogo affascinante e un ottimo soggetto per le foto.
