A Majuli, come nel resto dell'Assam, i monasteri rappresentano la sede della religione, ma anche delle tradizioni artistiche, portate avanti da secoli. La sattriya è una forma di danza classica, nata tra il 1400 e 1500, che unisce folklore e religione ed è volta a rappresentare le storie mitologiche. Questa forma d'arte è tutt'ora praticata dai monaci vishnaviti. I monaci che ne prendono parte sono esclusivamente uomini e ragazzi. Per questa ragione, coloro che devono recitare parti femminili, vengono truccati e vestiti da donne. Ho passato 4 giorni nell'isola di Majuli e sono entrata oni giorno nei satra.
