Le inferiori, hanno colore di fondo rossiccio con una fascia basale grigia e una larga banda centrale bianca. I sessi sono simili; l'apertura alare è circa 45-55 cm. Biologia Passa l'inverno allo stadio larvale per riprendere in primavera l'attività nutrendosi di caprifoglio (nei nostri querceti particolarmente Lonicera implexa). Il bruco ha il corpo verde con parti ventrali brunastre. Sul dorso spiccano caratteristiche escrescenze spinose. Dalla crisalide di tipo pendulo a maggio sfarfallano gli adulti. Normalmente due generazioni, ma in condizioni climatiche favorevoli, anche una terza. Distribuzione ed ecologia È propria dell'Europa centro meridionale, ma quasi del tutto assente nella penisola iberica. In Italia è diffusa ovunque, dalla pianura ai 2000 m. Frequenta macchie e boschi radi ove è presente la sua pianta nutrice. Sempre più scarsa nel comprensorio per via della distruzione del suo habitat. nutrendosi di caprifoglio (nei nostri querceti particolarmente Lonicera implexa).
