La Darsena è tornata al suo splendore prima dell'avvio dell'Esposizione Universale del 2015.Il sindaco di Milano, il giorno dell'inaugurazione dopo i lavori di ristrutturazione, ha detto: “ Riaprire questo luogo vuol dire riaprire una finestra che si era chiusa, e fare entrare aria, gioia, voglia di stare insieme. Vuol dire essere ancora più fieri della nostra Milano” Com'è la nuova Darsena? Sul piano operativo il progetto si è sviluppato in tre macrointerventi: la creazione di uno specchio d'acqua navigabile, la rimozione del vecchio mercato sostituito da un altro del tutto nuovo, la trasformazione di piazza XXIV Maggio in area pedonale con il pavé e la modifica della viabilità in tutta l'area. Per la costruzione dello specchio d'acqua si è proceduto con una la pulizia del letto e la successiva ricostruzione delle sponde. Sempre in corrispondenza di questo intervento è stato realizzato uno spazio verde. Ai lati dello specchio d'acqua sono state realizzate due passeggiate con pavimentazione in mattoni rossi e serizzo: una, più ampia, sul lato di via D'Annunzio, con una caffetteria, l'altra sulla parte opposta di via Gorizia. Ci sono, inoltre, due nuovi passaggi sull'acqua: una passerella di circa 35 metri che congiunge i due lati della Darsena di via D'Annunzio e via Gorizia e una di 12 metri sulla Conca di Viarenna. Tra via D'Annunzio, la nuova piazza e l'acqua si trova il nuovo mercato realizzato dopo la rimozione di quello vecchio. È composto da 30 stalli sistemati all'interno di una struttura in acciaio di colore verde, accanto ci sono 11 spazi più piccoli e i depositi della merci: accolgono gli esercizi commerciali che operavano nella vecchia sede. Il terzo macrointervento effettuato è quello relativo alla riqualificazione di piazza XXIV Maggio, che ha comportato rilevanti novità: illuminazione LED, 12 platani, cancellazione del traffico stradale grazie alla realizzazione dell'area pedonale, una pavimentazione realizzata principalmente con i masselli e con cubetti di granito nel rispetto del disegno storico della piazza. Altra importante novità, infine, è la riapertura del canale del Ticinello, che si può attraversare attraverso due ponti del '500 e del '700 riportati alla luce dopo oltre 80 anni e restaurati: si tratta di due strutture che assicuravano l'accesso alla città di Milano dalla zona sud. Come vedete dalla foto, il lato verso il grande mercato, è diventato un luogo di grande aggregazione, un ritrovo dove passare qualche ora e bere un caffé in compagnia.
