Notturna dell'abbazia di S. Giovanni in Venere, nel comune di Fossacesia (prov. di Chieti). L'abbazia, le cui origini vanno collocate intorno all'anno 1000, è in stile cistercense e, secondo la leggenda, sarebbe stata edificata su una precedente costruzione religiosa pagana dedicata alla dea Venere Conciliatrice (di qui la probabile origine etimologica). Raggiunse il suo massimo splendore intorno al 1200, epoca in cui, nell'annesso monastero vi erano stabilmente dagli 80 ai 120 monaci in una struttura dotata di aule studio, laboratori, una grande biblioteca ed un ricco archivio (i cui testi sono oggi custoditi a Roma), locali per gli amanuensi, due chiostri, un forno, un ambulatorio, delle stalle, un ricovero per i pellegrini ed altro ancora. Nel 1881 l'Abbazia fu dichiarata monumento nazionale. I decenni che seguono ne segnarono il progressivo degrado, causato dalla scarsa manutenzione, da alcuni terremoti e, infine, dai bombardamenti della seconda guerra mondiale. Nel 1954 vi si è stabilita una comunità di Padri Passionisti, che da allora provvedono agli interventi di manutenzione. Dagli anni cinquanta in poi, una lunga serie di restauri ci ha restituito in buone condizioni la chiesa e ciò che rimane del monastero. La sempre maggiore diffusione nei circuiti culturali ne ha diffuso sempre più la conoscenza e l'Abbazia è stata citata anche nelle riviste dell'UNESCO.
