Come ogni volta, una scarica di emozione mi attraversa da capo a piedi appena incrocio lo sguardo di un animale di bosco. Il camoscio è attento, vigile a 360°. Mentre mi guarda, cercando di valutare quanto io sia per lui una minaccia, l'orecchio sinistro è volto all'indietro per ascoltare i rumori alle sue spalle. Poi, con calma, scompare nel bosco. Questo camoscio, incorniciato da un paesaggio autunnale, è un esemplare maschio. Lo si riconosce da quella che si chiama “barba”, ossia la irta criniera che dal garrese si sviluppa lungo il dorso. La barba è molto accentuata soprattutto d'inverno, durante la stagione degli amori, che va da fine ottobre a metà dicembre. Per attirare le femmine, i maschi sfregano le loro corna sui tronchi o sulle rocce, per rilasciare il secreto delle ghiandole poste sul capo.
