(André Gide) La notte del 5 dicembre dei demoni cornuti (tra i quali si nasconde il Diavolo in persona) scendono dalle colline per invadere le città, armati di torce infuocate e verghe con cui tormentano uomini e donne. Solo l'intervento di San Nicolò può interrompere le loro scorribande, portando doni ai bambini che durante l'anno si sono dimostrati più bravi.
