Appena prima che il sole tramonti, escono i krampus, che senza freni rispondono alle provocazioni dei ragazzi e degli adolescenti. Rincorrono, fra urla, mugugni e grida, i bambini, ragazzi ma anche adulti, punendoli con colpi di verga alle gambe.
Per placare la loro ira i bambini e i ragazzi dovranno recitare una preghiera. Solo così i krampus li lasceranno andare. Le rincorse e gli inseguimenti da parte dei diavoli possono durare anche ore, fino a quando le tenebre scendono sul paese e lungo le vie, non è più possibile vederne alcuno. Quello è il momento in cui San Nicolò, trainato su un carro, sfila sfila insieme ai diavoli, e insieme a loro accende un falò. Dopo interroga i bambini, e con quelli che nel corso dell'anno, si sono comportati bene, egli sarà generoso di regali, tra i quali dolci, mentre per quelli che non si sono comportati bene, ci sarà un brutto rimprovero.
Oltre a questo, San Nicolò deve placare le ire dei krampus nei confronti degli spettatori. I krampus, infatti, sono selvaggi, feroci e quindi in questa particolare serata danno sfogo a quelle forze che per tutto il resto dell'anno rimangono non liberate..
Dalle ore 18.00 circa i Krampus usciranno dalle viscere della miniera della galleria Kaiser Franz del Parco Internazionale Geominerario e sfileranno per le vie del paese per dare inizio al Gran Falò e incontro con San Nicolo, vin brûlé e assaggini per tutti.
