The 13th century church of St Lawrence & St Mary in the tiny village of Stratford Tony, about 10km west of Salisbury, is no longer in use for religious worship but has a Conservation Order placed on it and is maintained by a national charitable trust.
It's up a steep muddy track, halfway up a hill and I shot this from the hillside opposite, as the early sun was creeping up over the red tinged autumnal trees. I cloned out the A4 computer printed white notice saying 'Church Open' that was pinned to the church door, with this long telephoto shot it was clearly visible in my shot.
The Church is open to view 10-4pm (though it was unlocked at 8 a.m. when I finally got there myself yesterday). The village has cottages built by a stream with a ford and you can picture it as a subject for painter John Constable, like his 'Hay Wain'. It was a perfect, if very cold, morning for photos. (as was the rest of day!) |
