Il fiume che trasportò la culla di Mosè e la nave di Cleopatra, che diede acqua e cibo agli antichi Egizi, che ispirò le conquiste di Alessandro il Grande e di Giulio Cesare, che lambiva l'ineguagliabile mole delle Piramidi e dei Templi, scorre ancora oggi; pochi fiumi mondo toccano tante varietà di territorio lungo il loro tragitto verso il mare, ma il Nilo è un fiume di 6.671 chilometri di lunghezza è il maggiore fiume del pianeta, scorre da sud a nord ed è formato da tre fiumi principali, noti come Nilo Bianco, Azzurro e Atbara, che formano un bacino fluviale pari a circa un decimo della superficie dell'Africa, esteso su 3.348.870 chilometri quadrati. Molti pensano al Nilo soltanto come al fiume bordato da deserti che scorre attraverso l'Egitto, ma in realtà le sue sorgenti si trovano oltre 4.800 chilometri a monte della nazione, nel cuore dell'Africa, e il suo corso si snoda tra foreste tropicali e pluviali e attraverso le praterie della savana e le paludi prima di raggiungere realmente il deserto. L'inondazione prodotta ogni anno dal fiume compensa la scarsità delle precipitazioni, che in questo deserto ammontano a meno di 25 centimetri di pioggia all'anno; tuttavia, per migliaia di anni gli spessi e torbidi depositi di nero limo trasportato dalla corrente hanno concimato queste terre, tanto che attualmente più del 90 per cento della popolazione egiziana seguita a vivere all'interno della fertile fascia di territorio che si estende lungo le sponde nilotiche. Lungo i banchi fluviali si osserva un susseguirsi di piccole fattorie e di villaggi, bruciati dal sole e tuttavia certi nella fiducia nel dono offerto dal fiume. Fra le molte creature che vivono nelle acque del fiume si contano pesci come la perca nilotica (Lates niloticus), che arriva a pesare anche 80 chilogrammi , oltre a pesci gatto, anguille, dipnoi (capaci di respirare l'ossigeno atmosferico) e pesci tigre, mentre le sue sponde sono la dimora dei coccodrilli del Nilo. E infine, c'è la parte turistica del grande fiume: le sue barchette, le sue feluche che portano i turisti in giro da Assuan fino ai poveri villaggi nubiani, dove si tocca veramente con mano la "povertà" e l'arte di arrangiarsi per sopravvivere.
