10.08.2017 Dopo esserci soffermati con il bellissimo Leone Blackie e il suo branco, ci siamo diretti verso la carcassa lasciata dai felini. Dopo aver assistito all'arrivo di una Iena solitaria che si portò via la testa dello Gnu predato, ecco comparire questa specie di Avvoltoio, il Capovaccaio orecchiuto. Una specie in grave rischio di estinzione e difficilissima da vedere. Lo scatto e il file non è dei migliori, ma documentare la presenza nel Masai Mara di questa specie considerata in pericolo (Status EN) mi soddisfa tantissimo. Fonte Wikipedia: I principali fattori di minaccia per questa specie sono gli avvelenamenti accidentali, le catture per ricavare farmaci tradizionali e carne, e la persecuzione diretta. In alcuni luoghi, infatti, la carne di capovaccaio pileato viene venduta come carne di pollo. Gli avvelenamenti intenzionali possono essere messi in pratica dai bracconieri per tenere segreta la localizzazione delle loro vittime. In Africa orientale molti esemplari muoiono a causa di avvelenamenti accidentali dopo aver mangiato la carne di carcasse-esca di bovini domestici trattati con pesticidi al carbofurano destinate ai grandi predatori. La specie è diminuita anche in seguito ai miglioramenti apportati dal punto di vista igienico e di smaltimento dei rifiuti in alcune aree del continente. Il capovaccaio pileato (orecchiuto) può essere inoltre minacciato dal virus dell'influenza aviaria (H5N1), con il quale entra probabilmente in contatto mangiando carcasse di polli infetti.
