"Quel 4 Novembre del 1966, a Firenze, il fiume Arno, gonfio di acqua scura e fangosa tracimò e inondò la città travolgendo tutto ciò che trovava sul proprio cammino. Quando le acque defluirono restò solo la distruzione." (dal libro L'alluvione di Firenze 1966) Quella avvenuta tra il 3 e il 4 Novembre fu la più spaventosa e terribile di tutte le alluvioni a Firenze e dintorni. In soli due giorni si riversò in tutta la regione una quantità d'acqua pari a un terzo della media annuale. Si calcola che la quantità d'acqua caduta nelle 24 ore fra il 3 e il 4 novembre fu di circa 180/200 litri per metro quadro e che il livello dell'Arno toccò gli 11 metri. Il Crocefisso del Cimabue fu recuperato dagli Angeli del fango, ed oggi è in esposizione nella chiesa di Santa Croce, porta i segni di quei tragici giorni.
