L'origine del nome di questo quartiere è palesemente il latino civitas, città. Questo infatti è ritenuto il più antico nucleo dell' abitato. Racchiusa entro le mura fino al XVI secolo, la Civita per le sue caratteristiche morfologiche può considerarsi una fortezza naturale, aggrappata ad un altipiano a forma piramidale circondato dal burrone della Gravina e da altri strapiombi e ripidi dirupi. Il burrone della Gravina e le mura hanno reso, per secoli, inespugnabile il sito durante i periodi di assedio. Ha rappresentato la città, con tutte le sue funzioni amministrative e religiose. Non a caso il Duomo Romanico è stato edificato proprio sulla sua acropoli, a rappresentare l'importanza del sito rispetto ai Rioni Sassi, considerati all'epoca piccoli casali fuori le mura ed utilizzati come luoghi di sepoltura. La sua parte più alta, dove sorge il Rione Castelvecchio, presentava numerose fortificazioni di epoca medioevale, e su queste oggi sorgono alcuni fra i più bei palazzi della città. I numerosi reperti rinvenuti nella Civita dal medico-archeologo Domenico Ridola attestano la presenza a Matera di un consistente insediamento umano già dal IX secolo a. C.
