Crego, attorno al 1850, contava su 94 anime e quando la parrocchia fu assegnata a Don Lorenzo Dresco, nativo di Varzo, in val Divedro, il nuovo pastore decise subito che l'antica chiesetta dei santi Rocco e Francesco era troppo piccola per la fervorosa fede delle sue pecorelle. Come fare? Senza alcun indugio Don Lorenzo iniziò a costruirne una, da solo, completamente con le sue mani, trasformandosi in muratore e scalpellino. Una fatica ciclopica, se si considerano anche i tempi, i luoghi e i mezzi tecnici, durata dal 1852 al 1878. Prete generosissimo con i poveri e, al tempo stesso, votato a un misticismo indotto anche da un rigore inflessibile verso se stesso. Tra le testimonianze dirette sulla sua vicenda umana - poche peraltro - tal Francesca Piretti, per otto anni al suo servizio come perpetua, racconta che tutte le mattine, alle ore 3, Dresco si sottoponeva al cilicio e all'autofustigazione a sangue; a detta della donna pare che "giunse a dormire sul nudo pavimento nel solaio della chiesa, ove si conserva ancora la pietra che gli faceva da guanciale". Sfinito dalle privazioni, dalla fatica e dalla malattia, forse una polmonite, morì nel 1878 all'età di 70 anni e, tra i più anticlericali, c'è chi affermò che finì i suoi giorni in conclamata pazzia.
