Opened in 1864, after Brunel's death, this 214m long, 75m high toll bridge, is still in daily use today, by all traffic, except for heavy vehicles, which might cause structural damage. It spans the steeply cliff edged Avon Gorge and until its opening, the detour incurred was very long indeed!
At the time, it was considered one of the biggest engineering challenges, in the world!
Not easy to photograph close up, I had help from a clear bright day back in March 2015, when bare trees did not hinder the view so much.
It is free to walk across, the views are amazing - as are the industrial and architectural details and all that glorious ironwork. You can drive across, for a small fee, but of course, you cannot stop and go to the edge for the spectacular views. |
