Unione di due scatti Stamattina mentre cercavo un posatoio per una farfalla mi sono accorta in tempo che c'era un ospite, un bellissimo Misumena Vatia (Clerck, 1757) Chiamato comunemente "ragno granchio dei fiori" La femmina varia dai 7 agli 11 mm, mentre il maschio non supera i 6 mm. Il corpo è corto, largo e appiattito, come quello dei granchi. Gli otto occhi, visti di fronte, sono disposti su due file orizzontali di 4 elementi ciascuna. Sono molto piccoli e distanziati. Nelle femmine, il contorno degli occhi di solito presenta luminose colorazioni gialle, arancioni o rosse. La femmina è, di base, di colore bianco, ma, come la femmina del Thomisus Onustus, è in grado di cambiare colore (per mimetizzarsi sui fiori, luogo di caccia), secernendo un pigmento giallo. La colorazione (dal bianco al giallo limone, al giallo verdognolo, con tutte le sfumature intermedie) è reversibile, e cambiano solo i tempi: due o tre settimane per diventare gialla, meno di una per tornare bianca (espellendo il pigmento). Spesso presenta anche, sull'addome, due striature laterali rosse o grigio-verdognole. Le zampe sono bianche o gialle. Il maschio è di colore giallo chiaro o bianco, con l'addome percorso la larghe striature di colore rosso scuro. Anche le quattro zampe anteriori presentano vistose bande bruno-rossastre. Come gli altri ragni della famiglia Thomisidae, si sposta con movimenti laterali (adatti per muoversi all'interno dei fiori), ha le zampe anteriori allargate verso l'esterno come le chele del granchio, e non costruisce la tela, ma pratica la caccia ad agguato, uccidendo le prede con un morso velenoso. La femmina ama appostarsi su piante in fiore leggermente svettanti sulla vegetazione circostante, più raramente anche sulle foglie. Rimane immobile, divaricando le prime due coppie di zampe e, non appena un insetto si posa, lo attacca fulmineamente e gli sferra un morso velenoso, in genere all'attaccatura del capo. Non avvolge la preda con la tela, ma la tiene (non solo con le mandibole, ma anche con le zampe) finché non ha succhiato tutti i fluidi corporei, operazione che può richiedere anche ore. Si ciba di tutti gli insetti che visitano i fiori (api, vespe, ditteri, farfalle), e anche del nettare dei fiori stessi. Il maschio vaga da un fiore all'altro in cerca di femmine; l'incontro tra due maschi spesso produce lotte cruente, che causano loro molte mutilazioni. L'accoppiamento avviene all'inizio dell'estate, dopo la loro ultima muta. In genere il maschio non viene attaccato dalla femmina, ma la sua vita si concluderà comunque a breve. La femmina depone le uova su una foglia, che poi arrotola e cuce con la propria tela, a formare una sorta di cono gelato: un astuccio protettivo e mimetico molto efficace. Le sorveglia fino alla loro schiusa, ma non offre ai piccoli alcuna cura parentale: al massimo rompe la tela per agevolare la fuoriuscita del neonati. I piccoli, in cucciolate di centinaia di esemplari, già dalla nascita sono in grado di procurarsi il cibo, aggredendo la preda in gruppo. Poi, poco tempo dopo la prima muta, secreto un sottilissimo filo al quale si appendono, alla prima corrente d'aria si lasciano trasportare lontano dal luogo di nascita. In autunno avranno già raggiunto circa la metà della loro dimensione massima. Per svernare si nascondono sul suolo. Vive in luoghi aperti ed assolati, come prati, giardini e margini boschivi, sia aridi che umidi, e sui bordi dei sentieri. In Italia è diffuso ovunque. Gli esemplari adulti si trovano da aprile-maggio (prima i maschi) ad agosto.
