Borgo Pio) è una strada che collega via di Porta Castello a Via di Porta Angelica ed il suo toponimo deriva dal nome del pontefice che la fece costruire, Pio IV, con tanto di bolla, datata 5 dicembre 1565 S.Angelo", ovvero la posterula che si apriva nelle Mura Leonineall'altezza dell'odierna piazza Pia. Il documento descriveva i lavori previsti per il nuovo borgo, reso ameno, salubre e privilegiato; inoltre decretava che fosse rialzato a maggior livello per eliminare i rischi derivanti dalle inondazioni del Tevere ed a tal proposito ordinava che vi fosse realizzata anche una rete fognaria. Come spesso accadde nella realizzazione di nuove vie o zone, anche stavolta il pontefice accordò moltissimi privilegi e concessioni a coloro che avessero costruito abitazioni nella nuova Civitas Pia, in particolar modo alle cortigiane. La costruzione della via, avviata da papa Pio IV, fu poi proseguita e terminata da papa Gregorio XIII, come testimoniava un'iscrizione, oggi scomparsa, situata al termine della via presso la chiesa di S.Anna dei Palafrenieri: ossia "Gregorio XIII Pontefice Maximo, avendo cura della salute dei cittadini, abbellì con edifici la Città Pia, iniziata da Pio IV, e lastricò le vie con la selce nell'anno 1580, VIII del suo pontificato La via e l'intero Borgo non tardarono a riempirsi di osterie, dove trovavano ristoro i pellegrini che giungevano in pellegrinaggio a San Pietro. Nei secoli, la tradizione si è rinsaldata, e oggi accanto a qualche negozio di articoli religiosi, ci sono ristoranti, taverne e osterie per tutte le tasche. Con i famosi menu turistici, si fanno una concorrenza spietata, al punto che, la strada è piena di camerieri Che invitano pellegrini e turisti ad accomodarsi nel loro ristorante.
