L'antica costruzione del vecchio sedile costituisce l'edificio più importante della omonima piazza; fu realizzato nel 1540 e destinato alla funzione di sede delle adunanze municipali dell'università cittadina. L'attuale struttura si deve ai lavori di ampliamento e ristrutturazione effettuati a partire dal 1759. La facciata è caratterizzata da un grande arco d'ingresso fiancheggiato simmetricamente da due torri campanarie, l'una con meridiana e l'altra con l'orologio. Il prospetto principale è inoltre adornato da sei statue: due sopra l'arco in posizione centrale, rappresentano i patroni della città Sant'Eustachio a sinistra e la Madonna della Bruna a destra, mentre nelle nicchie valvate ritroviamo le quattro virtù cardinali giustizia, fortezza, temperanza e prudenza monito per l'uomo e il suo operato per condurre una vita dedicata al bene e al buon governo. Distribuiti su due livelli piano rialzato e primo, gli uffici dell'amministrazione comunale hanno avuto qui sede fino al 1944 per poi spostarsi nell'ex monastero di Santa Lucia in Via Luigi La Vista ed occupare nel 1982 l'attuale e moderna sede municipale in Via Aldo Moro. Il vecchio sedile ha subito nel tempo un cambio di destinazione d'uso che lo ha reso luogo focale non più solo della piazza, ma anche cuore musicale della città divenendo sede principale del Conservatorio dedicato al compositore materano “Egidio Romualdo Duni”. I livelli interrati dell'edificio ospitano dai primi anni ottanta infatti, un moderno Auditorium con una capienza di circa 450 posti a sedere. Alla luce di quanto esposto Piazza del Sedile può essere considerata il salottino del centro storico di Matera, animata e frequentata in tutti i periodi dell'anno. Luogo identificativo, di aggregazione e socialità dove i gradini del vecchio sedile ospitano oggi più che mai, liete chiacchierate in compagnia di prelibatezze e souvenir locali, grazie alle innumerevoli attività commerciali e botteghe artigiane di lavorazione di tufo, legno e terracotta. Il tutto dolcemente accompagnato da un sottofondo musicale che spesso echeggia nella piazza, proveniente dalle aule del conservatorio.
