In basso, la chiesa dei SS. Pietro e Paolo, popolarmente conosciuta come la chiesa di San Pietro Caveoso e considerata, nei tempi andati, uno dei maggiori punti di riferimento religiosi di Matera sia per l'ampiezza della parrocchia, che per la ricchezza dei suoi beni, risale alla fine del XIII primi anni del XIV secolo, mentre la iniziale costruzione risale al 1218. La facciata barocca è motivata da paraste che incorniciano i portali e terminano in acroteri, mentre le nicchie contengono rispettivamente le statue a destra di San Paolo, a sinistra di San Pietro e al centro della Madonna della Misericordia, simbolo della Chiesa universale, che accoglie sotto il suo mantello coloro che ne invocano protezione; da notare alla sinistra della Vergine i supplicanti sono raffigurati calzanti dei cappucci sul capo, secondo quanto accadeva all'epoca della costruzione della Chiesa, quando erano molto diffuse le confraternite religiose che spesso prevedevano l'anonimato dei loro membri. L'edificio di culto ha subito modifiche e ristrutturazioni nel corso dei secoli con la perdita di molte delle caratteristiche costruttive originali. Nel XVII secolo la chiesa veniva totalmente ristrutturata con l'attuale facciata e la costruzione della torre campanaria, mentre l'interno veniva ingrandito, venivano aggiunte le cappelle laterali e sostituita una volta in tufo all'originario soffitto ligneo a capriate. Nel 1752 la chiesa fu riconsacrata dall'arcivescovo Lanfranchi e fu ancora modificata: fu aggiunta la cuspide sul campanile. Sopra, la chiesa di Santa Maria di Idris è una chiesa rupestre, cioè scavata nella roccia. È situata nella parte alta del Monterrone, una grossa rupe calcarea che si erge nel mezzo del Sasso Caveoso; vi si arriva attraverso una rampa di scale molto ripida. Il nome Idris deriva dal greco Odigitria, colei che mostra la via, oppure dall'acqua che sgorgava da quella roccia. La chiesa rupestre presenta un avancorpo in muratura con a lato un piccolo campanile a vela; l'interno, a causa dei continui rimaneggiamenti subiti nel corso dei secoli, non presenta nulla dell'originaria struttura.
