A Est rispetto alla città di Matera si estende il parco archeologico storico-naturale della Murgia Materana e delle Chiese Rupestri, un'area che contiene alcuni tra i più importanti siti archeologici d'Italia, risalenti al Paleolitico ed al Neolitico, oltre che veri e propri gioielli, le chiese rupestri, incastonati nella roccia. Il parco comprende le alture carsiche di Murgia Timone e Murgecchia che terminano, a Ovest, a strapiombo sulla Gravina di Matera, un piccolo torrente che divide la Murgia dai Sassi di Matera, alimentato da un unico affluente, il torrente Jesce (che nasce nei pressi di Altamura). Una delle caratteristiche più importanti della Murgia è la presenza di oltre un centinaio di chiese rupestri disseminate in tutto il territorio, a volte nascoste dalla fitta vegetazione e scavate lungo gli argini scoscesi delle gravine in luoghi impervi e di difficile accesso, impreziosite da spettacolari affreschi che testimoniano la devozione che si è protratta fino ai giorno nostri.
