Piazza Mercanti, è una piazza di Milano creata come centro della vita cittadina in epoca medioevale, successivamente trasformata in via Mercanti. Per piazza Mercanti si intende, nel linguaggio quotidiano, la piazza circoscritta dal palazzo della Ragione, la Casa dei Panigarola e la Loggia degli Osii. Al centro un pozzo del secolo XVI, chiamato il Pozzo degli Avvocati ed è costituito da blocchi di arenaria in stile barocco, mentre le due colonne e la trabeazione, sono state aggiunte nel XVIII secolo. In origine, era collocato tra il palazzo della Ragione e quello dei Giureconsulti e ad oggi è probabilmente l'unico pozzo rimasto in un'area pubblica milanese. Si dice che attorno vi camminassero i legulei, ossia gli avvocati, da cui ebbe origine un famoso proverbio milanese: “Guardet dalla saetta e dal tron / e dai specifich di Messer Zenon“. Oggi lo si può ammirare al centro della piazza, collocato nel luogo in cui un tempo si trovava la pietra dei Falliti. Su questa pietra, infatti i debitori erano costretti a stare a natiche nude, rendendo così, pubblico il loro stato Osservando la piazza da questo punto si deve immaginare lo spazio circostante ricco di fatti e luoghi scomparsi: ad esempio l'osteria della Pattona, frequentatissima dagli avvocati per la gustosa trippa, la rosticianna, per la polenta e il vino; qui inoltre ebbe luogo anche un delitto commesso da Luchino Visconti, duca di Milano, che non riuscendo a sedurre una donna, sposata a un certo Francesco Pusterla, la decapitò e, a monito, ne espose la testa nella piazza. Va ricordato infine che fra il 1944 ed il 1951 la piazza ospitò la sede provvisoria della Rinascente, a seguito della distruzione sotto i bombardamenti della sede di piazza Duomo.
