È una vecchia grotta di scorrimento lavico che già durante il periodo del Romanticismo veniva usata come deposito di neve. In varie fasi fu modificata per migliorarne la funzionalità, furono infatti scavati tre pozzi che ne consentissero un facile riempimento. La grotta ha due ingressi, in uno (quello ripreso in questa foto) furono ricavati dei gradini nella roccia per facilitare l'accesso, nel secondo venne scavato uno scivolo in trincea che veniva probabilmente usato all'epoca per farvi accedere i muli, sempre per il trasporto della neve. Si narra che anche i ladri e i contrabbandieri usassero questa cavità per nascondere temporaneamente i loro bottini, in attesa di riprenderli in momenti più propizi.
