Xi'An fu la prima capitale della Cina e Qin Shi Huang (260 - 210 a.C.) fu il primo feroce imperatore, che fece costruire a protezione della sua tomba e come simbolo di potere questo incredibile esercito. I soldati ed i cavalli sono stati realizzati a grandezza naturale, cesellati con grande dettaglio e vestiti con riproduzioni fedeli delle armature dell'epoca. Per rendere l'esercito ancora più realistico, i soldati erano muniti di armi vere (poi saccheggiate) e la terracotta era completamente colorata (i colori sono stati persi durante il restauro). Il sito dal 1987 è stato inserito tra i 'Patrimoni dell'umanità' dall'UNESCO, al momento sono stati recuperati e restaurati circa 8000 soldati, 18 carri e 100 cavalli e si stima sia solo il 50% di quello che ancora è sepolto.
