La Cattedrale di Matera fu terminata nel 1270, ed edificata nella “civita”, il punto più alto e visibile della città ove sorse il primo nucleo abitato dei Sassi. L'edificio è in stile romanico pugliese e presenta un esterno ricco di elementi fortemente simbolici che richiamano la vita spirituale dell'epoca. La facciata principale è rivolta verso la vallata del Sasso Barisano e presenta, sulla porta maggiore circondata da delicate decorazioni floreali, la statua della madonna della Bruna, santa protettrice della città, mentre nelle nicchie ai lati della porta, vediamo a dx S. Pietro, mentre a sx S. Paolo. Nelle nicchie esterne laterali vediamo a dx S. Eustachio, e a sx S. Teopista patroni minori di Matera. Le statue sono attribuibili ai Persio, famiglia materana molto attiva artisticamente nella metà del '500. Entrando nella Cattedrale di Matera appare evidente il contrasto con lo stile esterno. Nulla è rimasto allo stato originario, eccetto pochi importanti affreschi ed i bei capitelli medioevali figurati delle 10 colonne, molto lavorati e l'uno differente dall'altro; il resto è stato completamente alterato nel corso dei secoli. La pianta della chiesa, a croce latina e a tre navate, misura 54 m. di lunghezza, 23 di altezza e 18 di larghezza, ed è stata alterata nel corso del tempo, in quanto è stata allungata sfondando l'abside e modificandone la forma. Nel seicento sono stati aggiunti ovunque stucchi e decorazioni che nel 18esimo sec. sono stati ulteriormente ricoperti da una patina dorata Anche il soffitto originale è stato coperto nel 1719 con un controsoffitto ligneo e nel XIX furono inserite tre tele dipinte da Battista Santoro con temi cari alla cultura materana: S. Giovanni da Matera e S. Eustachio nei medaglioni laterali e “la Visitazione della Vergine” al centro. Nei riquadri sulle pareti subito sotto al soffitto “Storie della Vergine”, affreschi di Anselmo Palmieri. Chiusa per 13 anni per restauri è stata riaperta nel 2016: ha preso avvio tutto nel 2003, quando il crollo di un cornicione sopra un altare ligneo in una navata interna laterale fece suonare la campanella d'allarme. Fu allora che fu disposta la chiusura della cattedrale. Ma non era che l'inizio: qualche mese dopo ci sarebbe stato un più importante crollo in un altra navata della cattedrale, intitolata alla Madonna della Bruna e a Sant'Eustachio (i due patroni della città dei Sassi)
