Il Castello del Catajo deve la sua costruzione alla famiglia Obizzi, originaria della Borgogna (Francia), essa si può considerare, nella storia italiana, una famiglia di “Capitani di ventura”, giunti in Italia al seguito dell'imperatore Arrigo II nel 1007. In un periodo di pace Pio Enea I degli Obizzi (il quale impose il nome all'obice, il cannone da assedio), attratto dalla bellezza dei Colli Euganei, decise di costruire un palazzo adeguato alla gloria della famiglia ampliando la precedente casa materna costruita nei primi decenni del '500, oggi chiamata Casa di Beatrice. Esso fu ideato dallo stesso Pio Enea avvalendosi dell'aiuto dell'architetto Andrea Da Valle e sta a metà tra il castello militare e la villa principesca. La parte più imponente detta Castel Vecchio fu costruita in soli tre anni fra il 1570 e il 1573 anche se diversi ampliamenti furono compiuti fino alla seconda metà del XIX secolo. La famiglia Obizzi si estinse nel 1803 con il marchese Tommaso, che lasciò il castello agli eredi della Casa d'Este, Arciduchi di Modena; furono anni di splendore con Francesco IV e Maria Beatrice di Savoia, che amarono particolarmente il castello e fecero costruire l'ala visibile più a nord, detta Castel Nuovo, per ospitare la corte imperiale austriaca in visita. Alla morte di Francesco V, senza figli, il Catajo passò all'erede al trono d'Austria Francesco Ferdinando D'Asburgo. Fu per opera di questi due ultimi proprietari che le raccolte archeologiche degli Obizzi, assieme a vastissime collezioni tra cui strumenti musicali, armi e quadri, furono trasferiti a Vienna e nel castello di Konopiste a Praga . Dopo la prima guerra mondiale il Catajo venne requisito dal governo italiano come riparazione dei danni di guerra. Messo all'asta a seguito della crisi del 1929 il castello venne acquistato dai Dalla Francesca che lo rivendettero alla fine del 2015. Il castello è ancora oggi di proprietà privata.
