Val Viola: valle bianca, secondo una prima interpretazione dell'antica grafia “Albiola”, che deriverebbe dall'aggettivo latino “albus”, “bianco”. Anche se una più recente ed accreditata interpretazione etimologica (sostenuta dall'auctoritas del grande dialettologo Remo Bracchi) ci porta ad “alveolus”, piccolo alveo, forse con riferimento ad alcuni inghiottitoi del torrente Viola Bormina (detto anche semplicemente Bormina), restiamo alla prima, decisamente più suggestiva. La valle non offre, infatti, l'immagine di un piccola alveo, mentre vi domina la luce: è, infatti, ampia, luminosa, candida, per le tracce ancora apprezzabili di antichissimi ghiacciai, per il suo orientamento da est ad ovest, che le regala lunghe ore di luce, prima che il sole, proprio dietro il suo limite occidentale, il passo di Val Viola, prenda temporaneo congedo. Ed è anche origine, una delle due origini dell'ampia vicenda della Valle dell'Adda. Il torrente Viola Bormina, infatti, ingaggiò un'antichissima contesa con il rivale Adda, sul primato per la denominazione della valle. Prevalse l'Adda, cui spettò ampia gloria nel suo corso coronato da montagne ed in quello, più pigro, fra le pianure padane. Il torrente Viola dovette rassegnarsi al rango di tributario, ma la sconfitta fu per un soffio, ed anzi, guardando una carta geografica, ed escludendo il territorio di Livigno, che appartiene al displuvio settentrionale retico, abbiamo l'impressione che con ampio semicerchio antiorario, quella che chiamiamo valle dell'Adda nella sua regione superiore pieghi il suo andamento verso ovest e trovi proprio in Val Viola la sua origine.
