La Liturgia del Venerdì Santo Pennese, che affonda le sue radici nel Quattrocento, fu istituita ufficialmente a Penne come ricorrenza religiosa nel 1570 dal Cappuccino umbro Padre Girolamo da Montefiore. L'importanza e l'originalità di questa processione è data dai simulacri che la compongono, in particolare dal gruppo ligneo della Passione e dalla Coperta Funebre sulla quale è adagiato il Cristo morto, ricca di ricami in oro e argento e di fili di seta variopinti applicati a una base di velluto nero e conosciuta anche con il nome di Copertone
