E' il 1527 quando in occasione del “sacco di Roma” l'allora pontefice Clemente VII si rifugia ad Orvieto e per suo volere commissiona ad Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane la costruzione del pozzo che doveva servire da approvvigionamento di acqua in caso di assedio della città di Orvieto. Di fatti il pozzo doveva, almeno inizialmente, essere ad uso della rocca fortificata e per questo all'epoca della costruzione si definiva “Pozzo della Rocca“. Dopo un breve periodo in cui ebbe anche l'appellativo di “purgatorio di San Patrizio” in epoca ottocentesca assunse il nome attuale di Pozzo di San Patrizio per volere dei frati del convento dei Servi ai quali era nota la “leggenda del santo irlandese” (secondo la quale Patrizio fosse custode di una grotta senza fondo, il celeberrimo “Pozzo di San Patrizio” appunto, dalla quale dopo aver visto le pene dell'Inferno, si poteva accedere al Purgatorio arrivando persino ad intravedere il Paradiso). E' da questo momento che il pozzo, avendo ormai perso la sua funzione primaria, ed era divenuto oggetto di curiosità e attrattiva dei visitatori che passavano per Orvieto. Il progetto del Sangallo, che già lavorava sulle fortificazioni della città, si ispirò alla scala a chiocciola della Villa del Belvedere in Vaticano (stesso sistema architettonico si ritrova anche nella scala regia di Palazzo Farnese a Caprarola) e creò un geniale sistema elicoidale di scalini in modo tale che la vie per scendere e salire il percorso del pozzo (profondo circa 53 metri) non si incontrassero tra di loro generando problemi di “traffico”. Oggi è un vero piacere discendere fino alle sue profondità percorrendo gli oltre duecento gradini che lo compongono.
