Nel Quattrocento i senesi costruirono 9 mulini in linea nella laguna di Orbetello, ai piedi dell'Argentario: all'epoca funzionavano grazie alla forza dell'acqua (che entrava ed usciva dalla laguna con flussi e riflussi ogni 6 ore) con la quale venivano fatte girare le macine per la produzione di farina dal grano portato con i cosiddetti barchini tipici della zonaNel 1557 la città di Orbetello divenne la capitale del piccolo Stato dei Presìdi (creato per volontà del re di Spagna Filippo I e di cui facevano parte anche Porto Ercole e Porto Santo Stefano) ed i mulini vennero restaurati dagli spagnoli con pale a vela iniziando a sfruttare la forza dei venti grazie al loro sapiente orentamento: quattro a maestrale e cinque a scirocco.Dei nove mulini oggi ne rimane solo uno: lo trovate sulla punta occidentale di Orbetello, all'inizio della diga fatta costruire nel 1842 dal Granduca Leopoldo II e che collega la città con l'Argentario
