Scoperta parzialmente nel 1909-1910 il complesso è un esempio mirabile di commistione tra villa d'otium e villa rustica, appartenuta forse alla famiglia degli Istacidii, fra le più importanti della Pompei di età augustea. Presenta, secondo gli studi più aggiornati, un impianto architettonico risalente al I secolo a. C. con successive trasformazioni fino al momento dell'eruzione (79 d.C.). L'odierno assetto della villa si deve agli interventi che hanno avuto luogo in seguito al terremoto del 62 d.C., quando si avviò la conversione dell'edificio da villa residenziale a complesso agricolo e produttivo. Al momento dell'eruzione del 79 d.C., erano in corso lavori di adeguamento della struttura da parte dell'ultimo proprietario. Il lussuoso quartiere residenziale si trova sul lato ovest e si affacciava sul mare, impostandosi su un suggestivo asse prospettico costituito in sequenza da atrio, tablino e sala di soggiorno chiusa in fondo da una panoramica esedra semicircolare fenestrata. Dal soggiorno con esedra si accede, attraverso un passaggio laterale, alla sala dei Misteri. Il nome della villa si deve agli affreschi che ornano questo triclinio. La Sala dei Misteri è coronata da uno straordinario ciclo pittorico, ampiamente discusso dagli studiosi, che occupa la fascia mediana della sala, al di sopra di uno zoccolo decorato a finto marmo che funge da podio. La scena è dominata dalla coppia divina posta al centro della parete di fondo, in cui si identificano Dioniso e Afrodite (o Arianna). Il culmine della tensione narrativa è raggiunto nella scena rituale in cui una donna inginocchiata scopre il fallo, mentre un personaggio alato è intento alla flagellazione rituale.
